3.31.2005 Yeah, It's here again. The Last Thursday Of The Month. That time of the month. You know....you get grumpy, irritated, crampy, nauseous....you cry for no reason....yep......The High Action Boys (Minus One) are playing! So I waited til the last minute to tell you...what's new? I call it crowd control. If you've been to the last couple of these, you know that it's wise to get there early and stake out a seat! Last time we got to play as long as we wanted, which, if you know me, can mean, well........let's just say you'll be ordering breakfast at the Sidewalk! Tonight, however, there is an act following us, so we gotta play a mean, clean, Hello/Goodbye set! (Craig is the Eggman) It's free, up close and personal, and generally just a really good time. Here's what a good time I had last month....After telling the band "Ummmm, no, I don't have any drink tickets".......followed closely by...."excuse me , waitress?! Can I get 18 beers for these tickets, please?" Then I hung out afterwards......and then I tucked it back in.......then I went home.....to the t.v. Have you seen the greatest info-mercial ever? You know............the HEE HAW one? Well, for the first time ever, I broke out my credit card.....at 3:30 in the morning....and ordered the 7 dvd set of Hee Haw. Then drifted off to sleep. Two weeks later I get my credit card bill and shout "hey, what the HELL is this?????? Someone is ordering stuff on my credit card!! Police!! Help!!! Then it all slooowly came back to me. 4 to 6 weeks later, it arrived.....and I've no regrets. Well, I have regrets, but they don't involve Hee Haw. What I wanna know is....how the heck did they get away with this on television in the late '60's???????? I mean...the Hee Haw Honeys??? holy crap! No wonder Dad's who didn't give a damn about country music tuned in across the nation.....humminah humminah humminah!!!! When Buck and Roy said "I'm-a Pickin', and I'm-a grinnin'!!", I see now what they meant. I'd be grinnin', too! Tonight! Thursday, March 31st Sidewalk Cafe corner of 6th St. and Ave. A 10 SHARP!!!!!!!!!!!! (do NOT get there late, you freak!) Tom, Philip and Craig 2.23.2005 Man, it's NICE outside....but I'm here writing to you...but that's good! Cause I'm here to fill ya in on a faux Spring happening! Tomorrow night, at Sidewalk (corner of 6th and Ave. A) were gonna do a full band acoustic show! And hey, it's FREE!! It's at 10 Sharp...looking forward to it, myself! Oh....by the way.....if you're in your trailer, watching NASCAR (or something like that...) and you see a Tylenol commercial with NASCAR drivers....the hillbilly singing the song.......is me! Fun stuff..... On a side (and sad) note.....my Uncle Bill, the hunky blacksmith on the back of the "Cross-Eyed and Bow-Legged" cd, passed away a couple days ago at 76. He felt like a rock star, having his picture in there! We should all feel like rock stars....all the time! Oh, and I got these famous bowed legs from THAT side of the family! See you tomorrow! 1.20.2005 Hey, I TOLD you I'd remind you. Tomorrow night, Friday , January 21st......EARLY!! 8 PM!! We'll be supporting one of my favorite singing , guitar slinging, songwritin' hep cats, the great Marshall Crenshaw at the new swanky Crash Mansion at 199 Bowery (@ Spring St.) First off is the ever swinging and swaying George Gilmore and the Giblets. The Giblets are a hot little band, I might add. Then it's The High Action Boys coming out of the moth balls with brother Leo back on board (we got him to ourselves for a few minutes...finally!) And we are , indeed, ready to .....how you say.......ROCK!! Then, the mighty Marshall Crenshaw. Truly one of my all time faves (hey, check out the enclosed photo for a good laugh, me and the Crensh in 1987!) Marshall is an oft- covered, highly respected songwriter (who probably wrote more songs you know than you think!!) He is also one MOFO of a guitar player, whether it be acoustic or electric...and what a voice!! Hoo man, it's gonna be a GREAT night. Hey, the man also got to play Buddy Holly in La Bamba, and John Lennon in Beatlemania........how cool is THAT!!!!???? I can't wait. I'll bet you can't , either! Doors are at 7:30 George Gilmore and the Giblets 8:00 SHARP! Tom Clark and the High Action Boys 9:00.......do I need to tell you?...SHARP!!!!!!!! Marshall Crenshaw 10:00 Price: a Measly $16.50 ( barely higher than you'd pay to see a crappy movie!) See you there! Hey, check out the places site, too! www.crashmansion.com
1.7.2005 See. I told you. Here it is 7 days into the year and here is yet another email from me. Boy, I'll bet it suddenly seems like it's gonna be a lonnnnnnnnng year, huh? Crap from me everyday. Well, here's why I'm bothering you. First, thanks to all that showed up last night at the Sidewalk. We had a great time, and plan on doing a regular thing there. Second, we have a gig booked for January 21st (Friday) at Crash Mansion on the Bowery with the great George Gilmore, AND Marshall Crenshaw. If you've ever been to one of the shows we've done with Marshall, then you know what a great night this will be. And with Georgie Peorgie Gilmore in the mix, it's just like family! I'll give you another heads up as the time draws near, but am telling you now because I'm sick of all the ribbing I get for , um, well, sending my gig emails on the day before, or day of, the gig. Here ya go, smart-asses. xoxxoo Uncle Tom (sans cabin) 1.4.2005 I finally found the best way to book a gig with no thought or stress involved. Have a couple beers at home. Meet a friend for dinner. Red wine. Go see the amazing Beat Rodeo. More beer for courage. Get up and sing with the band. More beer to wind down after singing with such a great band. Leave gig when the last note is played and Jon Graboff's onstage flask is empty....walk (if you call it that) down Avenue A , past the Sidewalk...decide, in the "Howsh my old Pal" mode (this occurs just before the 'I love you, man' mode in drinking) to see if Lach is around. I see him behind the board while some comedian is up there struggling..."Hiya, Lasssh, Happy New Year" to which Lach says "wanna gig?" "Shhhurre" "how about Thursday at 10?" "Okillee Dokilee, Lasssh!" Wake up the next day, find the napkin in my pocket.....Gig Booked. So, though I'm not going solo, I'm doin' this gig on my own. See? Just yesterday I said my new resolution was to once again obnoxiously over-play, and here I am already sending you this email!! True to my word. Thursday, Jan. 6th, 10 O'Clock SHARP, Sidewalk Cafe...corner of 6th Street and Avenue A.....see ya there! T-Diddy -- Tom Clark and the High Action Boys 1.3.2005 Happy New Year, you knuckleheads!! My resolution?? Well, to start writin' the emails again, keepin' up with you, and booking a bunch of gigs. Got some new songs, and gettin ready to go...gonna do some High Action Boys gigs, now that Leo is around more, some gigs with just Philip (his son just turned two! In six more months we hand him a tambourine and put him to work!) and some more with Craig. Looks like me and Craig are gonna be heading over to the UK and Ireland in March, on our own and with Kevn Kinney. I really really appreciate you people writing to me and saying "what the hell is up?" It shows the love!! Anyway, I was searching out my old band on the internet one day, and to my surprise I found a site that mentioned it (hey, just saw it for sale for $56 bucks on the net a while back!) Turns out the guy doing the site, Mike, also did the Chicago area Punk zine Spontaneous Combustion....I dropped him a line saying "howdy" and that was that...well, the other day he contacted me and wanted to do a little piece on the first ep, recorded in 1985, and asked me to contribute a little memory about it. Well, I did, and so did the other guys in the band! Now it's snowballing and it sure is a blast thinking about that time all over again. Check it out! The band was Blatant Dissent, the ep was "Is There A Fear" .....dig it! http://www.punkvinyl.com/blog/archives/000924.html#000924 12.22.2004
12.19.2004 Happy Buddy Hollydays, everybody! Guess what? Yep. They're just about to get better! Tomorrow (Monday, December 20th) is a special day.......our friend, James Brown Rock and Roll Dentist has a band called the Scared Stiffs, and they happened to be doing one of the Monday night shows at Manitoba's (Avenue B, between 6th and 7th Sts.) tomorrow...they needed an opening act. I said "let's do it....all Christmas songs....." So, Santabilly was born. We're gonna do a one-time (per year!) show at 8 0'clock sharp tomorrow night. Santabilly is James Brown Rock and Roll Dentist on Guitar/ Vocals, Me on the same, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group/ Rock and Roll renegade) on Bass, Glenn Healy (Simon and the Bar Sinisters/MIke Mok Band) on Drums. We'll be doing about a half hour of all the classics....."Daddy's Drinkin up Our Christmas", "I Want a Hee Haw Honey (or a Playboy Bunny) for Christmas", Etc. You know, the ones you grew up singing. Come on down, it's free! It's early! Then, stick around for the Scared Stiffs....Hardcore from up the Hudson! 10.21.2004 Hey, Folks!! Check it out! It's gonna be fuuuuuuun, as it always is!
