3.2.2004 Hey All You People Jumping the Gun on Spring Fever! I know it's been beautiful out there. I can feel it happenin', too, Maaaaan! I can see it now, too, thanks to my new glasses. The other night, while at a happenin' star studded birthday party, I did a total "Thelma-From-Scooby-Doo" move. You know the one....crawling around on the floor looking for her glasses while a ghost, or some evil groundskeeper/dressed as monster (or pirate)....soon to be found out by 'you meddling kids', hovers over her. I was standing there, minding my own (business, that is) and I felt my pocket where my glasses were..."hey, where's my....CRUNCH" I think to myself "please don't be my glasses....please don't be my glasses..." yup. SIGH. Soooooo, tonight I'll be checking y'all out. That's right, tonight! At The Knitting Factory (in the new and improved Tap Room!) for Kevn Kinney and Shayni Rae's "Conjoined at the Heart Birthday Blow Out" Doors open at 8 (there's someone added at the last minute by un-named management overlords who plays from 8:-8:20, and I don't know who it is) but the official gig starts at 8:30 with KK's old friend from waaaayyyyy back in the Milwaukee days, Scorpio Thunderbolt! Then, I am not actually sure of the order, (but does it matter??!!) We have Kevn, Me and the High Action Boys, Lenny Kaye, plus I hear other R and R notables throughout the night (Right, Adny Shernoff?) All kinds of craziness. Kevn is definitely one of music's most precious resources, and I ain't kidding. If you watched the grammy's a while ago, you'll know why we need a guy like K.K.. The closest thing I've known to Dylan since Dylan. Do you think I'm exaggerating? I'm not. And by that I mean original, prolific, hilarious, charming, words cutting to the bone via the heart, and a voice that is so recognizable that it can ONLY be Kevn (think Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Smokey Robinson....those ones you hear and instantly say 'oh, that's ______!') Long Live Kevn Kinney, and we're gonna be there to celebrate one more year that he's graced us with, and to kick off another one! K.K. and the lovely Shayni have their birthdays a week apart, and since they have to spend so much time apart, we're rocking them together tonight...Happy Birthday Kevn and Shayni! See y'all tonight! Tom The Knitting Factory NYC 74 Leonard Street 212-219-3132
2.19.2004 We have added more photo to "LIVE PHOTOS" and one "OTHER PHOTOS" 2.18.2004 Well, well, well.........I'm sitting here watching (and listening) to two videos that I just received in the mail from our old buddy Whit Smith (The Hot Club of Cowtown, and always honorary member of the H.A.B.'s!) They are of the '60's t.v. show Buck Owens' Ranch! Amazing quality. All live (no, this isn't Hee Haw) Truly inspiring. I'm just reminding you of the show at Sidewalk (corner of 6th St. and Ave. A...back room!) tomorrow (Thursday the 19th) at Sidewalk....10:30...(I'm supposed to hit at 11:00...sharp, come early and get a table!) Since Phil couldn't do it , I was gonna do it old school, just me and a git-box, but, after a lot of kicking, crying and screaming (by him), little Craig Chesler is now going to accompany me. 2.13.2004 Hey Good People of our fair city and abroad.......just got a call yesterday from our buddy Lach, and he said "there's an opening (the musical kind) at Sidewalk on Thursday the 19th at 11:00".....so I duly jotted it down. Hemming and Hah-ing (or Haw-ing, depending on your regional origin) for about 3 seconds...then I lustily accepted the offer (or challenge, as it seems to be these days........seeing how it used to be "oh , Tom's doing his 37th gig this week"...gettin' lazy in my old age..). So...there you have it. Thursday, Feb. 19th, Sidewalk Cafe, corner of 6th St. and Avenue A...FREE!! 11:00 p.m.....be on time, because these shows run like clockwork..I'll have about 40 minutes (as opposed to those 3 hours sets)....Oh, Hey, a tip of the hat to good ol' JoPo... Jody Porter of The Fountains of Wayne, for his two grammy nods...Jody, you came to that last Sidewalk gig, don't even think of coming to this one without a guitar, dammit! (Jody has a SICK vintage guitar collection.......bastard!) I promise you I won't make you play Stacey's Mom (even though I still love that freakin' song) On another note, I will be heading off to Ireland on April 13th for a (nearly) 2 week mini-tour, and....our own Craig D. Chesler is accompanying me!! (hey, he's payin' his own way...what am I, made of Money????) We're gonna be the Everly's on Speed. Shakin' up the Emerald Isle. Fun, Fun, Fun. Tell all your relations in the "Old Country" (hey, I don't care who you are, you've got some Irish in you...9/10ths of Fat Albert's Cosby Kids were Irish, did you know that?) Dates coming soon (hey, that's what they said to me when I was a teen...'don't worry, Tom, dates will come soon...'.........liars....) Oh, a very special show coming up on Tuesday, March 2nd...It's Kevn Kinney and Shayni Rae's Birthday party at the swanky new Tap Room at the Knitting Factory!!! The High Action Boys will be playing, K.K. will be playin', Lenny the Kaye will be playin', god....who knows who'll be there....I say it sounds like a pretty sweet night! Last night Lenny's gig at the Cutting Room was a packed smash of an affair....Lenny and the boys pumped out a joyful noise.....we (me and H) made sure we had a front row seat....everyone was there....Sal Maida and Lisa Burns of the Lovin' Kind...Little Steven and entourage..RPB, ed rogers, George Usher, Lisa and Bridget (the Jersey Girls), Emile (nyc rock and roll archivist!), .......what a bash!...alright, Link, book yourself another show...soon! In a few minutes I'm sending out some pics of recent (our last Cutting Room show) and from this summer (me and a couple NY rock and roll notables in the wee hours of the a.m............) to post on the site. Just so you know, last month (surprisingly, after a little downtime on our part!) was our biggest month on the H.A.B.'s site! Over 2,000 VISITS!!!! Who are you crazy people????!!! Well, whoever you are, we love you!! Thanks, and we'll see y'all soon! 1.13.2004 Hey Hey there, Peoplesicles!!! First I'd like to thank those who braved the nipple-erecting freeze to make it up (or down) to the Cutting Room the other night. It was a great time (hey, we got a call the next day saying they want us back there, pronto!) Sure felt good to have the whole gang back together on the stage! So, after saying that, (sorry Leo and Craig!) me and Phil are doing a little show...OLD SCHOOL!!! We are doing an old fashioned Tom and Phil show just for kicks in our old haunt, the Sidewalk Cafe (corner of 6th and Avenue A) on Saturday (the 17th) at 11 pm SHARP!!! It's gonna be a hoot, and it's gonna be free!! I really think you should make it to this event, since it's been a long, long while since me and Philco did one of these! Don't worry, don't worry....we're just keeping Craig and Leo in their road cases for this one show. I booked it solo when I talked to our old pal Lach the other day, then I found an old (great!) video of me and Phil playing there in '95 and got inspired to "get the band back together, man"...oh, wait, we never broke up! We're gonna be doing some newer stuff, some older chestnuts of ours we never play ("Blisters and Smoke", "Trouble at Home", Bad News Friend", etc.) and few of the old covers to make it all comfy and cozy. Oh, on a side note, Craig just got an electric ukelele. Yep..... I'm a little worried, too...... Our walking musical Library, Richard Brukner (hi-dilly ho, neighborino!) left outside my door something that both amazes and fascinates me a couple days ago. A live recorded Hank Williams show from Sunset Park, Pennsylvania.....July 13th, 1952 (he'd be dead 5 and a half months later) It's amazing. It's more than amazing. Pre-guitar gadgetry, pre-...well....everything...... it is an amazing aural snapshot of pure genius and plain talent. I'm so taken by it, that when I listen to it, I find myself staring at the stereo in the same way that people used to look at the radio before t.v......I'm also really surprised at how "in-tune" everything is, and his stage banter does not seem to be coming from a man who was really worn out and at deaths door. He even hawks his song folios from the stage, .....if you buy two, you get a discount! I think I'll start selling song folios from the stage. I'll have to have some made up. I don't quite know of the origin of this recording, or where you can get it, but I'm sure I'll have a hundred emails filling me in........how this has escaped me for song long, I don't know......AAAAAaaanyway......We'll see you at the show, enclosed (let me know, for thos that can't open the photos sent from this address) is the promised photo of me....and Hanson. Yes.......two people have already sent me emails back saying "which one is you"....so save it, weisenheimers!! It's from the Losers Lounge tribute to Burt Bacharach. Til Saturday, xo Tom
1.6.2004 Here 'Tis, Folks, the first gig of 2004, and it's a doozy! It's The Beat Club at the Cutting Room www.thecuttingroomnyc.com, owned by Law and Order's and Sex in the City's Chris Noth....(and for all you girls .....and a couple of you guys, you know who you are.... I hear he's there quite a bit!) The doors open early with a great DJ, yes, you heard me, a DJ...then at 7:30, the legendary guitarist for Australia's The Church, Marty Wilson-Piper www.martywillsonpiper.net takes the stage for a rare NYC appearance! THEN, at 9:30 SHARP .....dumb roll, please, The High Action Boys take the stage with the FULL LINE-UP for the first time in I-don't-even-wanna-tell-you-how-long!!!! I can't begin to tell you how ready we are to kick start this monster back up again! VROOOOOOOOM (cough cough) Vrooooooom! I hear it's a great room to see/hear a show in, so grab your passports and head up (or down) to 24th street (no. 19, between 6th Ave. and Broadway). Can't wait to see you! 12.19.2003 Last minute note (no holiday rant, lucky you!) Tomorrow night and January 8th!! Tomorrow is the Beat Goes On Christmas Show, and Jan. 8th is (finally) the Cutting Room Gig (the first official High Action Boys show with the whole line-up in months!!) More on that later, meanwhile, check this out!! No one told me it was a "glitter" xmas show, but I don't care anyway.....hey, if it's the last show at the Bottom Line, I'm gonna sing whatever I want, even if it's Happy Birthday or an Arbor Day song ( I wish I knew one!)...I'm singing the Orioles (not Baltimore) 1948 hit "What Are You Doing New Years Eve"...............xoxo Tom Edward Rogers and Jeanne Stahlman present: THE BEAT GOES ON VOL 18 HAVE YOURSELF A ROCK N GLITTER CHRISTMAS The Bottom Line Saturday December 20 7:30 & 10:30 The show will go on! Christmas cheer all around! This sadly will be the very last "The Beat Goes On" show at The Bottom Line and very well may be the last show that The Bottom Line presents. Hey, you've heard them all before, you know, the same old Christmas songs. Well, here's a chance to hear some fresh, great seasonal tunes. We've got Christmas songs by The Ramones, The Kinks, Thin Lizzy, The Sex Pistols, Slade, XTC, Roy Wood's Wizard, The Pretenders, The Waitresses, John Lennon, The Beach Boys, Keith Richards as well as some of the old chestnuts presented the way only The Beat Goes On knows how. We've even got Alvin and the Chipmunks. What more could you ask for? Get there early and you'll hear The Beatles special fan club Christmas recordings. It's a time to celebrate, reflect and a time to give. To this end a charitable donation will be made and audience members are asked to bring canned goods for the benefit of local community food banks. A holiday spirited band led by Andy Burton (Peter Noone, Ian Hunter) and featuring Dennis Diken (The Smithereens), Sal Maida (Sparks, Roxy Music), Jon Spurney (Susan McKeown) and Eric Nicolas (Phoebe Snow) will back singers including Ricky Byrd, Christine Ohlman, Willie Nile, Don Fleming, The Kennedys, Tish and Snooky, Joe Hurley, Tom Clark, Howie Statland, Lisa Burns, Marni Rice, edward rogers, Rich Pagano, Erik Paparrazi, Joshua Tyler, Kris Woolsey, Amanda Thorpe, Laurie Brand Blackstone, Michael LeMonde, and maybe even a few surprise guests. Come on down for Christmas and keep fighting for The Bottom Line and live music in NYC; and give something to charity as well. We're here to take your money and give you a great time in return. No matter what you do, have a great holiday from everyone at The Beat Goes On. We hope to see you here to celebrate with us. It's the love of music that makes us do it everytime!
